Stop Wasting HubSpot AI Credits on Fake Contacts
Junk contacts spend your HubSpot AI credits before anyone looks at them. Here is the eligibility gate that stops it, and why the OAIC treats it as a data quality control too.
Step 2: Use Data Enrichment as a Filter
HubSpot’s native Data Enrichment (now found under Records > Enrichment) is a brilliant way to verify a lead’s legitimacy. Before you purge a record, check the enrichment status.
Create an Active List called "Verified Lead" with these filters:
- Company Domain Name is known
- AND Email does not contain test.com or example.com
- AND HubSpot Score is greater than 0
- AND Lifecycle Stage is not "Other"
Not sure how many of your credits go to junk records?
Nobody checks the credit ledger until it runs out mid month.
If a contact stays in your "Pending Review" state and fails to get enriched with a real company domain, they are a prime candidate for the bin. If you are also creating a lead record automatically in HubSpot, put the same check in front of that too, so a bot signup never becomes a lead either.
Step 3: The Credit-Saver Workflow
This is where you protect your budget. Create a Contact-based workflow triggered when a contact is created.
- Action 1 (The Filter): Use an "If/Then" branch to check if they are in your "Verified Lead" list.
- Action 2 (The AI Action): Only if they are "Eligible," trigger your AI Data Formatting or Breeze Prospecting actions. The same gate belongs in front of your own agent steps, so read this next to running AI agents inside HubSpot workflows with Data Agent. Credits then only go to leads that actually exist.
- Action 3 (The Safety Purge): If they remain "Pending Review" for more than 14 days without any activity or enrichment, use the Delete record action.
The "No-BS" Trade-off
Always include a 14-day delay before the final delete. It gives your team a window to rescue any false positives before the data is scrubbed.
The technical trade-off
While HubSpot allows you to restore deleted contacts for up to 90 days, the goal here is to govern credits before they are spent rather than explain them afterwards. Keeping junk data out of your workflows from the start means your monthly AI credit limit goes on actual revenue-generating opportunities, not bot-filled forms.
The eligibility gate is also a privacy control
Worth knowing before you frame this to anyone as a cost saving. Under the Australian Privacy Principles, the OAIC expects personal information you hold to be accurate and up to date (APP 10), and it expects you to destroy or de-identify it once it is no longer needed for the purpose you collected it for (APP 11.2). A contact record that was never a person, sitting in a portal for two years, fails both. The Eligibility Status property and the 14-day purge are how you evidence that you have a rule, and that the rule runs on every record rather than when someone gets around to it.
Wrapping Up
Clean data is no longer a "nice-to-have", it is the fuel for your automation. Credit governance is portal housekeeping, the same discipline as automating customer credit limits for your sales team, where the workflow holds the rule so nobody has to remember it. That is most of what our AI Engineering service page describes. If you are worried your portal is currently a junk drawer, we can help you audit your property logic before you flip the AI switch. Wondering what to do with the junk already in the portal?
Most people switch the filter on and leave the old records alone.
Happy HubSpotting.
